About Athens

Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece.
Today it is the political, social, cultural, financial and commercial center of Greece.
The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, widely considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery and to the National Archeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities, as well as the new Acropolis Museum.
Athens is served by the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. The airport is accessable by the metro, the suburban rail, buses -to Piraeus port, the city centre and suburbs- and taxis.
The Athens area encompasses a variety of terrain, notably hills and mountains rising around the city, and the capital is the only major city in Europe to be bisected by a mountain range.
